CARROLL -- New Hampton left it all on the field, but in the end the Chickasaws could not overcome a great pitching effort by Underwood’s Jack Vanfossan. Vanfossan pitched 5 2/3 innings of no-hit ball before turning the ball over to Gus Bashore as the Eagles topped the Chickasaws, 5-1, Friday in the Class 2A state championship game at Merchants Park.

Iowa DNR Investigates Fish Kill in Northeast Iowa
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is investigating a northeast Iowa fish kill. On July 19th, the DNR Field Office in Manchester was notified of dead fish in Crane Creek, approximately two miles southwest of Readlyn in Bremer County. Officials believe the fish kill originated at 250th Street and Piedmont Avenue.

Search Warrants Lead to Drug Arrests in Fayette County
On July 19th, 2024, at approximately 8:00 AM, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office conducted a narcotic search warrant at 710 Mill St. in Clermont. As a result of the warrant Kobe Joseph Detra, 20 of Clermont was arrested and charged with Possession of controlled substance Marijuana 1st offense, Possession of drug paraphernalia, and two counts of child endangerment. Detra was transported to the Fayette County Jail where he awaited his initial appearance and was later released on an unsecured appearance bond. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol.
Oelwein couple seriously injured when three-wheeled motorcycle hit by car head-on
POSTVILLE, Iowa — An Oelwein couple is hospitalized after the three-wheeled motorbike they were riding was hit head-on by a car. It happened around 4:15pm Saturday afternoon at the intersection of Highways 18 and 52 west of Postville. The Alllamakee County Sheriff's Office says 31-yaer-old Mitchell Meyer of Dorchester swerved out of his lane to avoid a vehicle that had stopped to make a turn. “The Doctor” print donated to VMH by Schaller family from former Waukon artist Les PurDue
Veterans Memorial Hospital receives artwork donation ... The Schaller family of Waukon recently donated this painting to Veterans Memorial Hospital, according to the wishes of the artist, Les PurDue, formerly of Waukon. PurDue’s replica is of the famous, original 1891 painting of “The Doctor” in Great Britain, by artist, Luke Fildes. The painting has been used to portray the values of the ideal physician and the importance of the relationship between physician and patient, showing the physician’s professional and personal commitment. Pictured above, left to right, is Meg Schaller with her son, Dave Schaller, who had the painting reframed. PurDue’s replica of “The Doctor” is currently on display in the Meditation and Healing Center inside the main entrance to Veterans Memorial Hospital, for anyone who would like to view it in person. New Hampton scores nine runs in sixth inning to advance via mercy rule
New Hampton flipped the script from a tight, low-scoring affair to a mercy rule finish, beating Aplington-Parkersburg 11-1 in six innings. The Chickasaws scored two runs in the first inning, and after the Falcons cut the lead to one run in the top of the sixth, New Hampton responded with nine runs in the bottom of the inning to end Aplington-Parkersburg's first state baseball tournament in program history via mercy rule.

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) brought together more than 16,000 students and academic advisers from 48 states and territories to the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL from June 28-July 2 for the annual FBLA National Leadership Conference. The Conference is an opportunity for the best career and technical education (CTE) students in the nation to compete in more than 100 competitive events, take part in workshop sessions with industry leaders and state meetings, visit the expo exhibit hall, and conduct networking throughout the conference with the traditional state pin trading.
