Oelwein Italian Heritage celebration to be held Aug. 10
Oelwein’s Italian Heritage festival will be returning on Saturday, Aug. 10, to continue the tradition that was started several decades ago. Dominic “Squint” Pirillo began the celebration with others back in 1973 to honor their heritage and history of the area. On Monday, July 8, the Oelwein P.E.O. Chapter CL held a picnic, program and meeting at the rural home of Mary Jellings. It was a perfect summer evening to be enjoying Mary’s flowers and yard, but thankfully members decided to stay indoors. This was a wise decision due to the unexpected rain shower that came through while the sun was shining. It was a beautiful sight. Surely there was a rainbow somewhere in the distance. For Grace, Chaplain Linda Jensen shared a reading of Matthew 6:9-13. A delicious picnic meal with grilled hamburgers with all the fixings was served by hosts group #1: Mary Jellings, Irene Stocks, Betty Blunt, Elaine VandeVorde, Patricia Bennett, Karen Bouska and Jean Baldwin.

Iowa DNR Investigates Fish Kill in Northeast Iowa
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is investigating a northeast Iowa fish kill. On July 19th, the DNR Field Office in Manchester was notified of dead fish in Crane Creek, approximately two miles southwest of Readlyn in Bremer County. Officials believe the fish kill originated at 250th Street and Piedmont Avenue.

Benefit Swim Thursday (07.25) for Northeast Iowa Girls Injured in Tubing Accident
The New Hampton Swimming Pool will host a benefit swim Thursday (07.25) night on behalf of a pair of Northeast Iowa girls who were injured in a tubing accident. Ashlyn and Delaney Busta of Lawler were involved in a devastating accident while tubing on the Little Turkey River near Waucoma in mid-July. Ashlyn Busta hit her head and was knocked unconscious. She is still hospitalized in Iowa City from a brain bleed, but family members are hopeful for a full recovery. Delaney injured her ankle but has been recovering at home.
