Opponents stage protests against Florida state parks development plans pushed by DeSantis
DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) — Opponents of a plan pushed by Gov. Ron DeSantis to build golf courses, hotels, pickleball courts and other development at Florida state parks staged protests Tuesday at several sites as pressure builds against the proposal. The Republican governor’s Department of Environmental Protection unveiled the plans last week and had planned a single hour of public hearings near the nine affected parks. Amid growing outcry, a golf course proposal at one park was abandoned and the agency delayed hearings until at least week — if they happen at all. “It’s just contrary to what our parks are about,” said Democratic state Rep. Lindsey Cross prior to a rally outside Honeymoon Island State Park along the central Gulf coast, where the plan envisions pickleball courts to be constructed near its unspoiled sugar-sand beaches. “It’s a place to slow down, to reconnect with nature.’ About 150 people gathered at the Honeymoon Island event, many carrying signs with slogans such as “Save Don’t Pave” and “Parks Over Profit.” Similar protests took place Tuesday at three other parks and at the state DEP headquarters in Tallahassee.
Scientists, experts try to freeze coral to preserve the species at Florida Aquarium
TAMPA, Fla. — A group of international biologists and experts are attempting to freeze coral larvae to preserve the endangered species. Pillar coral, which looks like fingers or a cluster of cigars growing upwards, have very small, swimming larvae that are only a fraction of a millimeter long. Their size creates the opportunity to freeze them in an alive form in liquid nitrogen. To do this, scientists and experts will use cryomesh technology to preserve tens of thousands of larvae, according to a news release from The Florida Aquarium.

Defense attorney for Florida deputy charged in airman's death is a former lawmaker and prosecutor
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The defense attorney for a deputy charged with fatally shooting a Black U.S. Air Force senior airman in Florida’s Panhandle is a well-known litigator with decades of experience, as well as a former prosecutor and state lawmaker who unsuccessfully ran for governor. Attorney Rod Smith’s legal career includes his team’s prosecution in the 1990s of serial killer Danny Rolling, whose murders of five college students terrorized Gainesville, Florida, which is home to the University of Florida, and where Smith was state attorney. Rolling pleaded guilty to the murders, and his sentencing trial was televised on Court TV. Smith argued that Rolling deserved to be executed, telling jurors, “If these crimes do not justify the death penalty, it defies imagination what kind of crimes would have to exist to justify such a recommendation.” Rolling was executed in 2006.

Florida can enforce transgender gender-affirming care ban, restrictions. What that means
Florida's ban on gender-affirming care for transgender people under 18 and its new restrictions for adults may be enforced while a lawsuit works its way through the courts, a federal appeals court ruled Monday. That means that doctors in Florida may no longer provide gender-affirming care for minors such as puberty blocking or hormone therapies, even if the parent or guardian gives permission, with some exceptions. Children undergoing or "threatened" with such procedures may be taken into...
