Lima Fire Department extinguishes train car fire
LIMA — The Lima Fire Department responded to a train car on fire Thursday evening, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page. Firefighters were initially called at 7:45 p.m. to the vicinity of East Pearl and North Jackson Streets to respond to a report of a fire in a train car reportedly carrying coal. When responders did not find anything at that location, they moved to the rail yard off Robb Avenue, where they found the train car, according to the department.

Witt sentenced for possession of drugs
GREENVILLE — A Versailles male was sentenced on the original charge of aggravated possession of drugs. Judge Travis L. Fliehman presided. Kyron J. Witt, 24, of Versailles, was sentenced after his In Lieu of Conviction on the original charge of possession of drugs, a felony of the fifth degree was deemed unsuccessful due to a probation violation and driving under the influence of alcohol/drug allegations. Witt originally pleaded guilty in 2022. He had no prior felonies, nor prior records, only had a DUI and was granted ILC with the notion he would not violate the terms of the agreement. His defense attorney David Rohrer advised the court that this case fits the mold for a community control sanction sentence.
Federal funding secured for major road construction project in Shawnee Township
ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - Plans for a major road construction project in Shawnee Township are underway. The Allen County Engineer has secured federal funding that will cover the majority of a 2.8-million-dollar project that will make improvements at both the Shawnee Road and Breese Road intersection along with the South Dixie and Breese Road intersection. Breese Road between the two intersections will also get improvements, along with new pavement. A recent study has been completed on what changes would increase the safety of those areas.

Van Wert Hospital, the United Way, and West Ohio Food Bank are taking a proactive approach to fight the significant issue of food insecurity in the area by hosting two food distribution events this summer. As grocery prices rise, they want to continue supporting families in need by providing nutritious food options. The "Compassionate Initiative" by Ohio Health and West Ohio Food Bank has fed over 1,500 families in the past, and they hope to bring the same success to the upcoming food drives with the help of their volunteers.
