Van Wert Hospital teams up with local agencies to combat food insecurity
VAN WERT, OH (WLIO) - Van Wert Hospital is not only dedicating its time to health care but also to the well-being of its community. Van Wert Hospital, the United Way, and West Ohio Food Bank are taking a proactive approach to fight the significant issue of food insecurity in the area by hosting two food distribution events this summer. As grocery prices rise, they want to continue supporting families in need by providing nutritious food options. The "Compassionate Initiative" by Ohio Health and West Ohio Food Bank has fed over 1,500 families in the past, and they hope to bring the same success to the upcoming food drives with the help of their volunteers.

Allen Lima Leadership celebrations 35 years of developing adult and youth leaders in our community. The signature Allen Lima Leadership class runs once a year, from September to June. Executive Director Matt Childers told us that participants spend one full day each month on themes such as education, agriculture, economic development and criminal justice. Part of each day is dedicated to training in advanced leadership principles. Classes also develop and execute community service projects. 30-35 adults enroll in ALL each year. "One of the things participants say is the most important to them is not only the leadership component, but the networking and connecting." Matt told us that nearly 40 high school sophomores and juniors register for the ALL youth program every year. It involves, educates and challenges youth to reach their fullest potential as leaders. The Lima Rotary Club is one of the sponsors of the ALL youth program and hosts its annual graduation each spring.

The KSO continues its 30th Summer Series of free concerts in the parks with a battle of generations —1990s Swing Revival takes on 2020s hip-hop infused Electro Swing. Swing Revival or Neo-Swing was a musical phenomenon of the 1990s as West Coast bands rooted in the Swing era of the 1930s-40s began seasoning their sound with rock-a-billy, boogie-woogie, jump blues and ska. Groups like Royal Crown Revue and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy even made on-screen cameos in the films like The Mask (1994) and Swingers (1996), and brought this high energy swing into the mainstream and dance clubs across the nation. Sylvia Rose Poeppelman, 90, formerly of Osgood, Ohio, died on Friday, July 5 at Elmwood Assisted Living in New Bremen. She was born on October 13, 1933 in St. Sebastian, Ohio to the late Sylvester and Loretta (Bruns) Schwieterman. She married Victor Poeppelman on September 29, 1954 and he preceded her in death on May 27, 2019.
Allen County Museum to open new exhibition
LIMA — The Allen County Museum will open its last temporary exhibition of the year, “The Art of Domesticity” on Saturday, Aug. 17 at 620 W. Market St. in Lima. The exhibition will share contemporary art from five women artists, as well as decorative arts from the 19th and 20th centuries, with a lecture series starting in September and workshops starting in October to go with it.
