Some St. Michael residents awoke to the sound of gunfire and the commotion of emergency vehicles on the morning of March 2.

At approximately 4:47 a.m. a Wright County deputy conducted a traffic stop on Ivory Ave. NE in the City of St Michael. The driver and lone occupant of the subject vehicle exited the vehicle with a weapon, confronted the deputy and refused to comply with the deputy’s commands, according to a Wright County Sheriff’s Department press release.

The confrontation resulted in the deputy discharging his firearm, striking the subject. Wright County deputies immediately attempted life saving measures until paramedics arrived on scene and those measures were continued, the release stated.

Life saving measures were not successful, and the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The sheriff's department reported the deputy involved in the incident has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard operating procedure in an officer involved shooting.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is now investigating this incident .

KARE 11 reported Jennifer Carbert, who lives nearby, said her household awoke to the sound of gunshots and the sound of emergency vehicles streaming into the scene.
