Participate in 2024 Summer Reading Program at Robey Memorial Library
Robey Memorial Library’s “Read, Renew, Repeat” Summer Reading Program 2024 begAN Monday, July 1 and runs through Wednesday, July 31. Activities include Reading Challenges with prizes for all ages, Kids and Teens Grab-and-Go Activity Bags, craft events and fine forgiveness. This summer’s activities are further described below.
Mississippi River Adventure Day scheduled for August 5
Monday, August 5 more than 100 area kids and their adult chaperones will have the opportunity to explore the Mississippi River with the assistance of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Osborne Nature Center, the Prairie du Chien Rod and Gun Club, Effigy Mounds National Monument, Genoa Fish Hatchery, and Robert Vavra with Maiden Voyages.
Barbara B. Matejka
Barbara B. Matejka, age 86 of Prairie du Chien passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at Edenbrook in Platteville. She was born on August 4, 1937, the daughter of Elmer and Marjorie (Biggar) Van Horn. Barb married Robert “Bob” Matejka on Aug. 25, 1956. She studied at Richland County Teachers College before attending the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse where she obtained her master’s degree in education. Barb and her husband later moved to Prairie du Chien where she served as an educator for 26 years until retirement. She enjoyed playing slots at “the boat” in Marquette, Iowa, and socializing with friends at The Barn Restaurant in Prairie du Chien. Barb loved the Christmas season and spent most of the year buying gifts for those she loved. She especially cherished the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren.

Randalia loses population, unincorporates
(Radio Iowa) – One of the smallest cities in Eastern Iowa with a population of around 50, is no longer considered a city at all. Randalia was officially unincorporated on June 30th. City Clerk Katrina Lane has lived in Randalia most of her life, and talked with K-C-R-G T-V the impact of the city becoming unincorporated. “It kind of means I worked myself out of a job,” Lane says. Lane’s has four kids and her oldest child is teenage son Andy. “I think it just means that we won’t be able to call it Randalia, but that doesn’t change the fact that we still live in it,” Lane says.

Upper Iowa University (UIU) announced that it has earned the 2024-2025 Military Friendly School designation. Institutions earning the Military Friendly School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey.
