Eights Dominate Spearfish to Doubleheader Sweep
Pierre would score a total of 22 runs on 24 hits in two games winning 11-1 and 11-0 over Spearfish at home on Wednesday. Charlie Simpson would have an RBI double in the first to get the Eights off and running as Carter Schiefelbein would return to the lineup going 2-4 in game one with three RBIs making it 2-0 in the second and George Stalley adding an RBI in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Pierre added three runs in the fourth with Trevor Rounds also returning to the lineup going 2-2 in game one with two RBIs. Everybody in the Post 8 lineup would record a hit with Dawson Getz going 4-4 as Pierre scored five runs in the fifth and another run in the sixth to win it 11-1 in six innings. Nolan Petersen would go 3-4 with the game ending RBI hit as the Eights pounded out 17. Miles Doyle would get the run support to go four innings for the win giving up two hits, a run on three walks and six punch outs. Rounds pitched the final two innings without allowing a base runner.
New flow trail open near Fort Meade
STURGIS — The city of Sturgis and Black Hills Trails have collaborated on a downhill biking trail that is now open for use. The Downhill Optimized Bike Park, aka Flow Trail, is located on the city’s Barry Stadium property near the Fort Meade softball fields east of Sturgis. It is similar in nature to the project that Rapid City just approved on M-Hill - Thunderdog Trail.
Texas 4000 group coming to Belle Fourche
BELLE FOURCHE — A 26-member bicycle riding group representing Texas 4000 for Cancer will arrive in Belle Fourche at around 2 p.m. on Monday.. Texas 4000 for Cancer bills itself as “The World’s Longest Annual Charity Bike Ride.” Its mission statement calls for developing student leaders and engaging communities in the battle against cancer.
Man killed in crash near Belle Fourche
BELLE FOURCHE — A 69-year-old man died Tuesday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash near Belle Fourche. According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, around noon, the man was driving a a 2017 Toyota Sienna was traveling eastbound on SD Highway 34 near mile marker 13. For an unknown reason, the vehicle left the roadway and entered the ditch, struck a driveway approach and came to rest in an irrigation ditch. The driver died from his injuries.
Deadwood gaming jumps 1.66% in May
DEADWOOD — The South Dakota Commission on Gaming reported that May’s handle was 1.66 percent higher than May 2023. Table games handle showed the highest increase with a 10.25 percent increase. Sports wagering decreased 6.26 percent, while the slot handle saw a modest increase at 1.22 percent.
Antelope Creek Road bridge added to replacement plan
STURGIS — A bridge on Antelope Creek Road has been placed on Meade County’s five-year plan for replacement priorities. The Meade County Commission approved an amendment to the five-year bridge replacement plan on Tuesday. The plan lists bridges that meet criteria to receive grant funding for replacement. The bridge that was added to the plan is on Antelope Creek Road, and is located 24 miles east and 13.5 miles south of Sturgis.
