Four candidates apply for Sturgis Ward 3 seat
STURGIS — Four Sturgis residents have applied for consideration for appointment to the Ward 3 city council seat. The seat was vacated when former Ward 3 Councilman Preston Williams resigned from the position. Williams had 11 months left in his term. He resigned before the city council had finalized an ordinance that would allow for a special election to fill the seat. Therefore, according to state law, the council must appoint a replacement.

Spearfish author Bruce Junek encourages readers to discover adventure in books and beyond
SPEARFISH — Bruce Junek became an author almost by accident. Beginning in 1984, Junek set off on a 26-month bike trip, planning to travel the world. At his mother’s encouragement, he decided to keep journals to catalogue his experiences. Gradually, he sent those journals back to the states, where they became a kind of proto-blog.
Name released in Butte County fatal crash
BELLE FOURCHE — The name of the 69-year-old man killed June 25 in a single-vehicle crash near Belle Fourche has been released. According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, around noon that day, Randy A. Dockendorf, of Arlington, Texas, was driving a 2017 Toyota Sienna was eastbound on SD Highway 34 near mile marker 13. For an unknown reason, the vehicle left the roadway and entered the ditch, struck a driveway approach and came to rest in an irrigation ditch. Dockendorf died from his injuries.
Abandoned mine shaft near White Rocks Trail to be filled
DEADWOOD — The Deadwood City Commission gave permission to the city to hire RCI Construction to fill the entrance to an abandoned mine shaft near the White Rocks Trail on Monday. The mine shaft will be filled in to mitigate safety concerns of the new trail.

SPEARFISH — Citizen speakers expressed concerns about a proposed development on Colorado Boulevard at the Spearfish City Council meeting Monday night. A 40-acre parcel at 6025 E. Colorado Blvd., adjacent to Sky Ridge, could become a mixed-use development—with housing and commercial space. First, the property needs to be rezoned.
Sturgis gives city permissions for AFT-E street race
STURGIS — The logistics of installing a timing device on Main Street for the Spirit of Sturgis TT Race caused some city officials to raise concern Monday. During the Sturgis City Council meeting, some council members and Public Works Director Rick Bush expressed concern about an AFT-Events request to cut a 2 to 3-inch strip into the road on the third block of Main Street to install a timing loop that would help track race finishers. The timing loop is similar to what the city uses for its traffic lights.

Jackpine Gypsies MC has released its schedule of racing events for the 84th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which kicks off on August 2 and runs until the 11th. The Jackpine Gypsies MC is one of the oldest AMA-chartered off-road clubs. "The company that we use is Borderline Fireworks out of New Mexico," said Brooke. Borderline Fireworks also services and supplies three other stands in South Dakota; Ft. Pierre, Sturgis, and Whitewood. They acquired the four-stand territory over the winter from the New Underwood based company who had been supplying Philip with fireworks for about 20 years.
