In Loving Memory of Dan Waisanen
Dan Waisanen, a beloved brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Deadwood on July 14, 2024, at the age of 61. Born in 1963, Dan lived a life full of love, laughter, and adventure, making lifelong friends at every job he held. He started his career as a cook, became a core driller for gold, worked in construction, and found his passion making pasties at Lou Lou’s Bombdiggitys in Deadwood, where he was known as “Mr. Bombdiggity.” Dan cherished his family deeply, especially his nieces and nephews, and had a special bond with his favorite dog, Charlie. An avid Harley rider and skilled in auto body work, Dan enjoyed playing Cribbage with his cousin Ray and had a fondness for chickens. Survived by his siblings Jim (Monica), Connie Green, Cindy James (Todd), and Victor, Dan will be remembered for his big heart and gentle nature. Rest in peace, Dan. You will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts.
Mattson wins tie down roping title at NFR Open
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Sturgis’ Bodie Mattson earned the tie down roping title at the NFR open that ended Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo. Mattson completed his first effort in 12.8 seconds to finish fourth in Pool B’s first round. A clocking of 9.7 seconds in the second round was good for first place. He placed third in the average at 22.5 seconds on two go-rounds.

Zonta Club of Spearfish names essay contest winners
SPEARFISH — The Zonta Club of Spearfish hosts an essay contest for the Women in Science Conference for area middle schools in May. The contest was inspired by Amelia Earhart, her love of science and pioneering women’s rights. The club awards a cash prize to two young ladies who write a 500-word essay on a woman in science who they admire. This year, the club had multiple entries and the two winners were Maddy Campbell and Natalie Schutz.
Neutrino Day draws crowds to Lead for science
LEAD — Neutrino Day attracted thousands of people from throughout the country to participate in Lead’s annual science festival, Saturday. Preliminary estimates for Neutrino Day attendance is at more than 2,000 people. Sanford Lab Communications Specialist Mike Ray said there were more than 200 volunteers who helped with the event throughout town, and a total of 45 science booths set up between three locations, and six presentations at the Homestake Opera House.

The Oahe Zap, who have won six in a row, will face the Spearfish Sasquatch again tonight after a day off on Tuesday as the series continues in Pierre. Oahe is at 8-6 in the second half of the season and even with the six game winning streak, the Zap are still trying to claw their way up the standings.
