Hall County, Neb. — One of five men charged in connection to a Grand Island teen that left a teen critically injured have been sentenced. According to Hall County District Court records, Andrew Owens, 21, was sentenced Wednesday to 8 to 24 years on charges of first-degree assault and conspiracy to commit robbery. He was given credit for 602 days served.
Grand Island’s George Park set for upgrades
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A popular Grand Island park is set for a major upgrade to the ball fields on its ground. According to city council documents, George Park is prone to rainouts because the ball fields aren’t draining properly. At Tuesday night’s meeting, the city council unanimously voted to spend just over $136,000 to regrade the site and reconstruct the irrigation, which the city believes will improve the fields, and reduce the number of games impacted.

Director of Grand Island and Hall County Emergency Management and Communications, Jon Rosenlund confirms there was an issue with Lumen’s national 911 system which didn’t allows calls to come through 911 systems in Nebraska. Patricia (Riley) McCue, of Grand Island, Neb., passed away on July 8, 2024, at Tabitha at Prairie Commons in Grand Island, Nebraska, at the age of 80. She was born on March 5, 1944, in Wilmington, Delaware to Michael Jr. and Patricia (Smith) Riley. She was united in marriage to Robert McCue on August 9, 1974, at the United Methodist Church in Stockton, Kansas. They were blessed with three daughters: Elizabeth, Kathleen, and Rebecca.

Allan Karl Ackerman, was born on July 24, 1939, in Sutton, to Karl and Elenora Ackerman, passed away July 9, 2024, at Hansen House Nursing Home in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Allan (Butch) graduated from Phillips High School in 1957 and then enlisted in the US Army. He was a member of the 78th Engineer Battalion, serving in Germany from 1957 to 1959, a member of the National Guard from 1959 to 1963 in Grand Island, and a member of the Iowa Air National Guard in Des Moines, Iowa from 1970 to 1991. He received the Southwest Asia Medal for his service in the First Persian Gulf War and retired as a Chief Master Sergeant in 1991.

But just who was Grover Cleveland Alexander and what did he do to get a community celebration named after him? Well, he was an American Major League Baseball player who played from 1911 to 1930 for the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals. He was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1938, the only player elected that year. He is still considered one of the best pitchers in league history.
