Western Oregon University announces new Foundation board members
MONMOUTH, Ore. – Western Oregon University’s Foundation announces three new board members: Brenda Rocio Martinez, Jordan Carpenter, and Miranda Garrison ‘09. Brenda Rocio Martinez is a first-generation student from Woodburn and currently serves as the Associated Students of Western Oregon University president. She is majoring in public policy and administration and minoring in communications and business.
Victims in deadly shooting at Portland boat ramp publicly ID’d by police
Portland police on Tuesday publicly identified the two men who were shot and killed at a boat ramp on Marine Drive on July 13. Jmeire Asher, 18, of Portland, and Deangelo Augustus, 38, of Salem, were killed around 8 p.m. at the M. James Gleason Memorial Boat Ramp, Portland Police Bureau said in a statement.
Man arrested for fatal Wilkes Neighborhood shooting
PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Police arrested a man who is allegedly responsible for the May 4, 2024, fatal shooting in the Wilkes Neighborhood. According to police, on Tuesday the Portland Police Bureau’s Homicide Unit, with assistance from U.S. Marshals arrested Alex M. Brown-Golden,23, and he is lodged at the Multnomah County Detention Center. Golden is charged with second-degree murder with a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon.

Portland author Alissa Hattman has made the shortlist for the nationwide 2024 Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction for her first novel, Sift (The 3rd Thing Press, 120 pages, $24). After an open nomination process last April in which authors and fans alike could nominate fiction novels that represented ideas reflected in Le Guin’s work, Hattman joins nine other authors on the shortlist. This year’s recipient of the prize will be chosen by a panel of authors that includes writers such as The Handmaid’s Tale author Margaret Atwood and The Paper Menagerie author Ken Liu.
