St. Petersburg Police Sergeant Forces Drunk Wrong-Way Driver Off Road Before Tragedy

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A St. Petersburg Police Sergeant is being hailed as a hero after forcing a wrong-way driver off the roadway and avoiding injuries to innocent drivers on Monday.

At 11:49 a.m., a Police Officer spotted a Honda Accord at MLK St. and 1st Avenue South going the wrong way on 1st Avenue South.

An attempt to stop the driver, identified as 49-year-old Shawn Michael Schmidhuber 49 of St. Petersburg, was unsuccessful, police say.

St. Petersburg Police Sgt. Michael Schade then got behind the man and tried to pull him over with lights and sirens, but the driver continued.

With three lanes of oncoming traffic, Sgt. Schade decided to hit the Honda and force it off the roadway in the 2400 block of 1st Avenue South.

“Thanks to Sgt. Schades quick action, no one was injured,” said SPPD.

Schmidhubr was charged with two counts of fleeing and eluding a police officer and one count of driving under the influence.
