DONALD WEBER
Donald “Don” Gene Weber was born Nov. 5, 1963, to Dean and Mary (Barnhart) Weber of Plato, Mo., and left this world and became present with the Lord July 6, 2024, following a tough battle with cancer. Speak Your Peace features ‘Be Inclusive’ in July
The “Speak Your Peace Civility Project” continues in July with “Be Inclusive.”. The yearlong program, which kicked off in January by the Waynesville-St. Robert Area Chamber of Commerce, is designed to help people navigate social media effectively, while reminding people to be respectful when using social media platforms.
Mary Johanna Jones
Mary Johanna Jones, age 88, of Devils Elbow, Mo. died Friday, July 5, 2024, in Mercy Hospital in Springfield. She is survived by her children, Jimmie Jones, Jr. of Devil’s Elbow, Faith Dunn (Tom) of Devil’s Elbow, Dawn Cleeton (William) of Kauai, Hawaii, and Michael Jones (Michelle) of Devil’s Elbow; and eleven grandchildren, Jessica Reed (Asa), Brett Jones, Melanie Burns (Michael), Patrick Dunn, Tyler Cleeton (Hope), Kyle Cleeton, Ryan Cleeton, Dylan Cleeton (Angie), Roxanna Jones, Rachel Jones, and Jonathon Anderson; fourteen great-grandchildren, Asa, Paul, Tessa, Noah, Nevaeh, Nivek, Dominic, Bianca, Ricky, Owen, Johanna, Matt, Aidan, and Elizabeth; her sister, Shirley Nichols of Port Huron, Mich.; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and many friends.

It’s time to Nominate the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year
The Waynesville – St. Robert Area Chamber of Commerce is preparing for its annual Citizen of the Year Award to be presented at our Community Leadership Awards Banquet. From now until November 15, 2024, the Chamber of Commerce will accept nominations from Chamber members. A one-page letter outlining the candidate’s qualifications and experience will comprise the formal nomination form, as well as a cover sheet including the following information: nominee’s name, home address, office address, home phone number, office phone number, sponsor, point of contact, day phone number, and a 150-word summary of the nominee with his/her photo.
MoDOT to hold I-44 meeting in Lebanon
Planned improvements for I-44 are the topic for a meeting set in Lebanon next month. The Missouri Department of Transportation is conducting an environmental study, called Forward 44, of more than 250 miles of Interstate 44 from the Oklahoma state line to the Route 100 east interchange near Gray Summit in Franklin County. This summer, MoDOT is holding a series of public meetings to encourage the public to give input on their concerns and observations along I-44, including a meeting in Lebanon Wednesday, Aug. 14, from 4–7 p.m. at the Wallace Center, 325 Harwood Avenue. SECOND AT BETA CONVENTION
Citlali Arzabala, a senior at Waynesville High School, placed second at the 2024 National Beta Convention held June 16-19 in Savannah, Georgia. She competed in the performing arts solo, duo, trio vocalist category against 38 other competitors. Citlali won second place for her performance of “I Have Nothing” by Whitney Houston. She qualified for the national convention by winning first place at the Missouri State Beta Convention in February 2024.
Percussion camp
Waynesville High School students Harley Atchison and Jack Gasek were selected to participate in the Mizzou Percussion Camp this summer on the campus of the University of Missouri - Columbia. They explored world cultures through percussion, playing steel pans, African gyil, frame drums and more.

Phelps County firefighters work pair of fires Tuesday
A couple of fires keep firefighters in Phelps County busy. The Doolittle Rural Fire Protection says crews worked a fire in a detached garage on County Road 8500, north of Newburg, Monday. History: Owner Chris Black started in the fertilizer business by purchasing Richland Plant Food, located in Richland, Mo., in 2014. The opportunity arose to expand in January 2019, when the building that was formerly MFA in Crocker, Mo., went up for sale.
