OLEAN, NY — In a game that didn’t look like it would go the full nine innings because of the weather or the 10-run mercy rule, the Oilers survived a late surge by the Salamanca Lizards on Monday night and won 11-9.
The win advanced the Oilers to the second round of the Western Division New York State Collegiate League playoffs. The game will be another single-elimination game, this time against the Hornell Steamers, who are on a 15-game winning streak.
The seventh inning proved to be the crucial inning for the Oilers, scoring their final three runs of the game. Center fielder JP Pennella brought in two runs with his inside-the-park home run. Right fielder Michael Norton drove in left fielder Jason Story off an error by Lizards left fielder Mitchell McKinney.
Starting pitcher Nathan Beimel held the Lizards to just one run on three hits and struck out five batters through the first six innings. Beimel was replaced with an 8-1 lead over the Lizards.
The Lizards didn’t want to give up on their season and scored eight runs in three innings off the three different relievers from the Oilers.
The Oilers will travel to Hornell on Tuesday night for their playoff game against the Steamers. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
