NWS upgrades Elkhorn-Bennington-Blair tornado to EF-4
LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - The National Weather Service office in Omaha has revised the rating for one of the Arbor Day tornadoes that struck eastern Nebraska and western Iowa in late April. Specifically, the tornado that tracked from Elkhorn into Bennington and Blair was originally rated as an EF-3 tornado with maximum sustained winds of 165 mph. After a thorough review, the NWS has upgraded that rating to EF-4 with maximum sustained winds of 170 mph.

West Nile Has Been Found in Iowa Mosquitoes
The good news is that at the time of writing, no humans in Iowa have yet tested positive for the West Nile virus. Mosquitos on the other hand have been found containing the virus in central Iowa. According to KCRG, mosquitoes were trapped at a park in West Ames sometime in mid-July. The park where these mosquitoes were found is sprayed or fogged every Wednesday night. Some of these mosquitoes contained the West Nile virus.
Brown’s Double Lifts Bees
Bryce Brown’s two-run double to center field in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Burlington Bees to a 7-6 win over Clinton in a Prospect League baseball game at Community Field Saturday night. It was the third win in the last four games for the Bees, who are now 11-7 in the season’s second half.
Gebhardt wins in Winged Sprints Class
Tanner Gebhardt captured the 305 Winged Sprints class on Saturday, July 20, at 34 Raceway. Cole Helmerson of New London came in second and points leader Cody Wehrle finished third. John Barnard of Sherman, Ill., came in fourth, followed by a trio of Burlington drivers: Dugan Thye, Nathan Murders, and Nick Guernsey. Chase Young of Altoona was eighth, Travis Pence of Stronghurst, Ill., was ninth, and McCain Richards of Burlington 10th.
