    Salem alumni weekend to include walking tour

    Salem Preservation Society will offer a walking tour Aug. 10 during the Salem High School Alumni Weekend .

    The celebration will be Aug. 10-11 in and around downtown Salem. Events Aug. 10 will be in the city’s downtown area; and on Aug. 11, the gathering will be in Waterworth Memorial Park. For more information on the alumni meeting, check out salemohioalumni.org.

    The docent-guided Stop and Smell the Roses Walking Tour will run 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and will begin at 443 S. Lincoln Ave., where the $15 tickets will be sold.

    The tour will take in all of South Lincoln Avenue, from Columbia Street to Southeast Boulevard, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The area includes more than 80 unique single-family residences. Certified Underground Railroad homes and carriage houses will be highlighted.

    The walking tour of South Lincoln Avenue takes about an hour, and participants should wear comfortable walking shoes. For more information, contact kellypta@outlook.com or gingergrilli@aol.com , and visit salempreservationsociety.org .

    Events on the weekend schedule:

    Friday – From 6 to 9 p.m., Maestro Joe Rottenborn will play tunes in McCulloch Park on East State Street in downtown Salem. Bring chairs.

    Saturday morning – Salem Farmers Market on South Broadway.

    Saturday afternoon – Freed Fest with celebrate Alan J. Freed, father of Rock ‘n’ Roll, at various music venues throughout downtown.

    Sunday – Free concert at 6 p.m. with Jimmy and The Soul Blazers along with a car show at Waterworth Memorial Park.
