A 61 year-old Salem man is dead after he was hit by a vehicle on Sunday morning on State Street near 47th Avenue SE, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

911 callers reported a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle just before 10 a.m. Sunday, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies and emergency personnel responded and attempted lifesaving efforts, but the man died at the scene.

Police identified the deceased as Michael Sissell.

State Street was closed between 46th and 47th avenues for three hours while Marion County CRASH Team personnel investigated the scene.

The sheriff's office said investigators found a silver four-door BMW was traveling eastbound when it hit Sissell. The 53-year-old male driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation, police said, and no citations or arrests have been made. It was not immediately clear what led to the crash.
