    Rowan deputies make arrest after months-long drug investigation

    A 47-year old man has been arrested by Rowan County Sheriff’s deputies following a four-month investigation into drug trafficking.

    Michael David Smith was arrested Friday, Aug. 16 and is facing numerous drug charges, according to RCSO public information officer Captain Mark McDaniel.

    Detectives from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit began an investigation into the activities of Smith in April of this year, looking into his possible involvement in drug trafficking in China Grove and Salisbury.

    During the investigation, investigators made multiple purchases of trafficking levels of crystal methamphetamine (“Ice”) from Smith in Rowan County. Throughout the length of the investigation, detectives seized over 630 grams of methamphetamine and over 30 grams of cocaine.

    Smith was charged with two counts of sale/delivery of schedule II controlled substance, four counts of trafficking in methamphetamine by sale, four counts of trafficking in methamphetamine by delivery, trafficking in methamphetamine by possession, trafficking in methamphetamine by transport, trafficking in cocaine by possession, and trafficking in cocaine by transport.

    Smith was given a secured bond of $1.5 million and placed in the Rowan County Detention Center.

    The RCSO Special Investigations Unit was assisted by the Criminal Apprehension Team and patrol division.
