    Saltillo High School Tuesday evening recognized students for their academic, extracurricular and athletic achievements as well as one outstanding staff member. At least seven different scholarships for a total of $261,000 in awards and one military appointment were announced as well.

    Saltillo ISD Superintendent David Stickels announced Frances Mowat as Saltillo ISD’s Teacher of the Year, for her dedication and support to school, even during times of personal adversity.

    US Marine Corps Sgt. Quinonez Baez announced David Whitworth’s decision to serve his country, enlisting in the US Marine Corps to serve in the infantry. Whitworth as part of his enlistment packet will receive the equivalent of $250,000, including the Hazlewood Act and the Post-9/11 GI Bill educational awards.

    Receiving a North Texas Softball Association scholarship in the amount of $500 was Ryleigh Redar.

    Jennifer Ricketson also presented to Redar, on behalf of Max Candaday, a $1,000 Masonic Lodge Scholarship.

    Maysen Pipkin received the Finnis and Onree Attlesey Scholarship.

    Three $1,000 scholarships were given in memory of Saltillo alumni Justin Tully, who passed away from cancer on April 14, 2021. The Tully scholarship established from donations from his family, friends and classmates was first awarded in 2022. Recipients of the award in 2024 are Caden McCill, Redar and Ross.

    Ricketson presented eight Saltillo Booster Club/ PTO Scholarships, one each in the amount of $500, to Caden McGill, Colton Mc-Gill, Jordan Metcalf, Harley Perez, Maysen Pipkin, Ryleigh Redar, Gabrielle “Gabby” Ross and Cristian Trejo.

    Saltillo ISD Superintendent David Stickels recognized Caden McGill as the 2023-2024 Saltillo High School Senior Class valedictorian and Cristian Trejo as the salutatorian.

    Advisor Jennifer Ricketson recognized Beta Club members, in whom she expressed pride in their service and work this year. In January, 32 of the 36 Beta members advanced to state. From those three — Heston Peeples, Kallie Potter and Boone Johnson — qualified to participate in the national Beta convention June 1619 in Georgia.

    FCCLA advisor Johnna West awarded $250 FCCLA scholarships to Caden McGill, Colton McGill, Ryleigh Redar, Gabrielle “Gabby” Ross and Cristian Trejo. This scholarship was first awarded seven years ago following sale of coffee. Since then, FCCLA sells various types of snacks, works concessions and holds other fundraisers throughout the year. Initially, the funds were divided between the FCCLA scholarship and Relay For Life. When RFL for this area was discontinued, the funds were designated for scholarships. This year, enough was raised to award five scholarships, West noted.

    In addition to presenting scholarships, West also recognized the year’s FCCLA officers as well as member, especially those who participated in the various service projects over the last year, including particpating in the Handicapable Rodeo, Help A Child benefit, donating cookies to Hopkins County CASA Cookie Walk, helping families through the local angel tree program. She too recognized FCCLA members for their achievements at contest, those who received medals and awards.

    West also awarded five special scholarships given in memory of educator Reta Eubanks in the amount of $250 each to Caden McGill, Colton McGill, Ryleigh Redar, Gabby Ross and Cristian Trejo. The award was set up in the memory of well loved faculty member Reta Eubanks, who passed away on Jan. 3, 2021, from cancer. The annual scholarship is the result of donations from the Saltillo ISD faculty, students and family.

    Ricketson too called out and presented medals and awards to the 37 students for their contributions which helped the school finish second overall or sweepstakes at the district UIL contest. Twenty Saltillo High competitors — Tobin Potter, Gabby Ross, Cason Carmody, Ethan Sexton, Kayden Van Rijn, Kenzi Pipkin, Diego Gonzalez, Lucas Womack, Shelbi Ricketson, Alyssa Partin, Jazmin Castro, Sara Martinez, Caden McGill, Dakoda Womack, Ryleigh Redar, Rylie Wartenbee, Cristian Trejo, Harley Perez, Jasin Alonso, Addi Pipkin and Jaime Alverez. One student, Katelyn Cline, was recognized for placing fifth in her event at region, which qualified her as an alternate for state. Also recognized for their district contributions were Maysen Pipkin, Crissey Camos, Yasmin Garcia, Kallie Potter, Grayson Gurley, Heston Peeoples, Kason Deleon, David Whitworth, Katie Olvera, Kevin Moreno, Mason Stillwagoner, Amberly White, Jackson Tully, and Boone Johnson.

    Students who remained on the A and AB were called to the stage to receive certificates for their academic achievement.

    Students also were recognized for their contributions to the teams’ achievements as well as regional and state wins, being named district and team MVPs, and receiving either honorable mention, first or second team and All District Honors
