20 dogs adopted before euthanasia deadline

SAN ANGELO, Texas ( Concho Valley Homepage ) — Concho Valley PAWS has announced that all 20 dogs scheduled for euthanasia have been fostered or adopted, with the final seven having been rehomed just hours before their deadline.

In an update posted to social media at 5:18 p.m. on July 23 — just 42 minutes before the dogs’ scheduled euthanasia time of 6 p.m. — CVPAWS stated that all 20 shelter pets had been adopted or rehomed over the course of the approximately six days leading up to their deadline.

The news came just under 3.5 hours after a previous update was released which stated that seven dogs remained at risk for euthanasia.

“Huge thank you to all the fosters and adopters that stepped up for these pups,” CVPAWS said. “Thank you to everyone who shared our posts!”

The 20-dog list was issued to the public by the City of San Angelo’s Animal Services Division on July 17. The division stated in its announcement that the San Angelo Animal Shelter was housing 199 dogs, which is 19 dogs more than its maximum capacity of 180. The shelter began to consider euthanizing the 20 dogs to remedy the overcrowding issue.

With the 20 pets now in new homes, CVPAWS said that its work is not yet over. To help it combat future lists, the organization urged San Angelo residents to have their dogs spayed or neutered and to consider adoption.

“This is unfortunately not the end,” CVPAWS said. “In order to avoid future lists we must spay/neuter our pets and foster/adopt from the shelter!”
