SAN ANGELO, Texas ( Concho Valley Homepage ) —According to a press release, The Texas Wildlife Association Foundation (TWAF) will celebrate the inaugural San Angelo Area Conservationist of the Year with a gala on Aug. 15 at Bentwood Country Club.

Starting at 5:30 p.m., The event will honor the Virgin James Powell families, including the James L. Powell, Madolyn Powell Mertz, and Marolyn Powell Bean families.

“The Powell, Mertz, and Bean families have ranched in West Texas for over 100 years and in doing so have exemplified conservation and land stewardship for the livestock and wildlife that call their pastures home,” TWAF President Alan Curry said.

Additionally, the gala will support the San Angelo Area Conservation Education Initiative, which aims to place a full-time conservation education specialist in local schools.

Greg Simons, a TWAF trustee, explained the critical role of education in addressing conservation challenges.

“Effective conservation starts with education,” said Simon.
