SAN ANGELO, Texas ( Concho Valley Homepage ) — The Blackshear Heights non-profit organization held its 7th annual Back-to-School Block party at Kirby Park on Saturday, Aug. 3.

The event ran from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and provided essential supplies and family-friendly fun for the community. Leary Owens, President of the Blackshear Heights Nonprofit organization, shared the motivation behind the event.

“The main reason why we do the back-to-school block party is that it stems back to our childhood memories,” Owens said. Raised by his grandmother, Owen recalled the challenges she faced in securing school supplies: “We hold these events because we wish we could’ve had these events growing up for the community.”

This year’s block party featured a range of activities, including a bounce house, basketball games, cornhole, putt-putt, axe throwing, and arts and crafts. Attendees also participated in giveaways that included backpacks, school supplies, hygiene like deodorant, body wash, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.

A special highlight was the appearance of Rowdy 325, the Dallas Cowboys fan club’s mascot. Children had the opportunity to take photos with Rowdy. Additional opportunities included free haircuts provided by Exclusive & Comb Together Barbershop, along with music and food to complete the day’s activities.
