Now that the dust has settled on the 2024 NBA Draft, it’s time for the San Antonio Spurs to turn their attention to NBA free agency and the trade market. The Spurs already got their potential franchise point guard of the future by selecting Stephon Castle fourth overall, but who else is joining Victor Wembanyama and Gregg Popovich this offseason?

According to Matt Moore of Action Network, the Spurs are one of several teams with an interest in trading for Milwaukee Bucks center Brook Lopez.

“Brook Lopez is most consistently the name brought up as involved in discussions, with San Antonio among the interested teams.”

While Lopez, 36, is certainly on the back end of his career, his presence could be supremely valuable to a young Spurs team that’s still trying to learn how to play winning basketball. After all, he boasts an impressive resume, with 1,025 career games played, plus another 84 playoff games.

As mentioned, while he’s now on the downswing, Lopez still has an ability to play at a very high level, like when he made the All-Star game back in 2014. He’s also a former NBA Champion, helping the Bucks accomplish their goals as a key starter in 2021.

Now, the Spurs could be looking at bringing in the 7-foot-1 center to San Antonio’s frontcourt, where he’d operate as Wembanyama’s primary backup. If so, it would be the first time Lopez came off the bench for an entire season in his 16-year NBA career.
