Chris Paul signs one-year, $11 million deal with Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs have signed veteran point guard Chris Paul to a one-year, $11 million deal, ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski was among the first to report Sunday.

Paul was released by Golden State just before the start of free agency after the team was unable to find a trade partner for him. He was on a non-guaranteed deal for $30 million, with the deadline being today.

Paul averaged 9.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and 6.8 assists in 58 games with the Warriors last season. Now, he will look to pair a formidable two-man game with Victor Wembanyama , who did not have quality guard play at all last season.

The Spurs should still be in position to trade for either Trae Young or Darius Garland if they want to go down that route. Paul, who turned 39-years-old, isn’t starter material at this point in his career. Though he will be a phenomenal table setter for a generational talent while being a veteran leader. That matters, even though his play has rightfully declined.

According to HoopsHype cap guru Yossi Gozlan, San Antonio can generate $26 million in cap room.

They have $18.2 million allocated to the non-guaranteed contracts of Devonte’ Graham , Julian Champagnie and Charles Bassey . Waiving them would create cap space for San Antonio to sign Paul outright. If not, they would likely have to use most of their $12.8 million mid-level exception to keep him.
