Many of the top NBA free agents have already found new homes. Paul George left the LA Clippers for the Philadelphia 76ers, Klay Thompson left the Golden State Warriors for the Dallas Mavericks, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope left the Denver Nuggets for the Orlando Magic.
With most of the top free agents off the board, teams looking to improve their rosters must do so with trades. Unless a surprise name becomes available, the top remaining trade candidate is Utah Jazz star Lauri Markkanen.
Many teams have been reported to have interest in Markkanen, with Chris Haynes of NBA on TNT and Bleacher Report revealing that the San Antonio Spurs are among these teams:
While the Warriors are considered by Haynes to be the aggressors in this scenario, it is somewhat hard to believe they will go all-in when looking at how they have approached the last few transaction periods. As for San Antonio, Markkanen could be a perfect pairing next to Victor Wembanyama.
Listed at 7'0", Markkanen has spent most of his career playing one of the forward positions, so he could certainly play next to another big in Wembanyama. Since joining the Utah Jazz, Markkanen has averaged 24.5 PPG and 8.4 RPG on a very impressive 49.0% from the field and 39.5% from deep.
The type of player that projects to be a good fit on any team, Markkanen could really help San Antonio alongside Wembanyama and new point guard Chris Paul. Still just 27 years old, Markkanen also fits San Antonio's longterm timeline.
Markkanen is entering the final year of his four-year, $67.5M contract and will be an unrestricted free agent after next season.
