Hundreds of Cox Communications employees collected more than 800 pounds of litter and harmful debris from Mission Beach and Mission Bay as part of the company’s annual community cleanup event.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria was on hand Friday to kick off the beach and bay cleanup, which was held in partnership with I Love A Clean San Diego and included 470 volunteers from Cox Communications, Cox Auto and Cox Enterprises.

The collected debris included a giant spool and a broken bicycle, as well as large quantities of microplastics and cigarette butts.

“Our employees care about our community and they’re always ready to get out there and make an impact,” said Chanelle Hawken, West Region vice president of government and public affairs for Cox Communications. “I Love A Clean San Diego shares our mission of protecting the environment.”

As part of the cleanup, Cox Charities presented $25,000 check to I Love A Clean San Diego for its classroom education programs to educate students about conservation and recycling
