SAN DIEGO (KUSI / FOX 5) – Down at Law Street Beach in Pacific Beach, San Diego State Football head coach Sean Lewis received his first taste of the surf here in town.

“I’m taking in as much summer fun as possible and getting to know the lay of the land,” said the newly arrived Aztecs head coach.

But for Lewis, who was raised in the Chicago area and has no prior surfing experience, how will he handle the lay of the sea? “[I’m going into this] as a learner,” he said. “It’s pretty cool. I kind of feel like a freshman all over again. I don’t know what I don’t know and I’ll get some coaching.”

The man to coach the head coach? Tom Matthews, the father of former Aztecs wide receiver Jesse Matthews and an avid surfer.

“Aztecs football had a silent auction and out of curiosity I wanted to see what items were available with really no intention of bidding on anything,” Matthews said. “I noticed one of the items was a surf lesson with Coach Lewis and I’m like ‘That’s all me.’ But I had something in my pocket I was going to pull out if I won, and once I won that item I called and said ‘Cancel the instructor, I’m giving the lesson.'”
