Padres Could Land Hard-Throwing All-Star To Add Pitching At Deadline

The San Diego Padres will need to be active ahead of the 2024 Major League Baseball trade deadline.

San Diego has lost some important pieces and yet it currently sits at 52-50 and is in the mix for a National League Wild Card spot. The Padres lost some star power this past offseason and then were bitten by the injury bug early this season.

Somehow, the Padres still have been able to stay above water and now seem like they actually could be a playoff team. If San Diego wants to fight for a Wild Card spot, though, it should be looking for ways to improve the bullpen.

One player the Padres were linked to is Los Angeles Angels All-Star hurler Carlos Estévez by The Athletic's Aaron Gleeman and Tim Britton.

"As a reliable late-inning reliever and impending free agent closing for an obvious seller, Carlos Estévez is one of the safer bets to be on the move," Gleeman and Britton said. He'd probably fit better as a setup man on a contender, Estévez has sliced his walk rate at age 31 and he can be used in key spots versus both righties and lefties. Potential landing spots: New York Yankees, San Diego Padres, and Philadelphia Phillies."

Estévez is expected to be moved and the Padres certainly would have a lot of competition for him, but he may be worth the prospect haul it would cost to bring him to town. He has a 2.45 ERA in 33 appearances so far this season and should be considered by San Diego.
