Padres surprisingly land Marlins All-Star in proposed trade by insider

If the season were to end today, the San Diego Padres would be in the playoff with the third National League Wild Card spot.

This is no small feat. The Padres are loaded with talent but also lost some massive star power this past offseason in Juan Soto, Blake Snell, and Josh Hader. San Diego had to regroup and now is in a better place overall than it was at this point last year.

San Diego has a 55-50 record and is looking like a playoff team. Things could get even better for them soon with the trade deadline just four days away . The Padres are expected to be active and The Athletic's Jim Bowden proposed a hypothetical trade that would bring Miami Marlins All-Star Tanner Scott to town.

"Marlins trade (left-handed pitcher) Tanner Scott to Padres for (left-handed pitcher) Robby Snelling," Bowden said. "In Snelling, the Marlins would be getting a 20-year-old left with huge upside, and to acquire a starting pitching prospect of this magnitude for a rental closer would be an incredible return. Snelling, the 39th overall pick in the 2022 draft, has control issues, as he's walked 33 in 73 1/3 innings while posting a 6.01 ERA this season Double-A.

"But his stuff is compelling and screams out that he'll eventually develop into a solid starter. This type of gamble makes sense for Miami. Meanwhile, the Padres land an impact lefty closer to go with their impact righty closer Robert Suárez, which would really enhance their chances of making the playoffs this year and doing some damage in October."

This trade is surprising because mainly has been linked to other clubs like the New York Yankees or New York Mets with the Padres rarely being mentioned. Scott has been great this year and will be traded so maybe the Padres should give the Marlins a call.
