SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A local resident recently reached out to the San Diego Humane Society after becoming overwhelmed by the number of pets in their home, officials with the organization told FOX 5/KUSI.

The Humane Society responded to the residence Friday, a location that was not disclosed, and ended up transporting a total of 48 cats and two dogs to campuses across the county. Each animal was given flea treatment and vaccinations before being placed in appropriate housing.

Each cat and dog will receive medical exams and spay/neuter surgeries, said the Humane Society. Then, they will all be made available for adoption.

This mass intake comes at a time when the Humane Society is already over capacity, with 1,962 animals in care. This includes 939 cats and 795 dogs, officials confirmed Friday. Back in May, the organization declared a state of emergency due to overcrowding.

“We are asking the community to help by choosing to adopt if they’re thinking of adding a pet to their family, opening their homes temporarily by fostering an animal, volunteering or making a donation to support second chances for these animals and the thousands more in our care,” the Humane Society stated.

More information about how to adopt and what pets are available can be found on the nonprofit’s website.

As a reminder to the public, the Humane Society has encouraged spaying and neutering pets to prevent unwanted litters and reduce the number of animals entering shelters.
