CIF State Track and Field Championships

When: Prelims on Friday, finals on Saturday

Where: Buchanan High School in Clovis

    Television: NFHS Network.

Boys outlook: Mt. Miguel sophomore Brandon Arrington is looking to double in the sprints. His wind-legal best of 20.64 seconds is the clear leader in the 200-meter dash, and he ran a wind-aided 20.40 last week. The only other runner to break 21 is Bakersfield’s Jalen Ford (20.95). Arrington’s 10.49 in the 100 is No. 5, but with a quality start, he could be unbeatable. El Camino’s Zeshaun Daley (47-7 ¾) and Mission Bay’s Justin Reichenberg (47-6) are 2-3 in the triple jump behind Whitney’s Spencer Tolaoluwa (47-9); Mission Bay’s Brandon Cheeks II is third in both the long jump (23-11 ¼) and the high jump (6-10); University City’s Kai Anderson is No. 3 in the pole vault at 16-8; Cathedral Catholic’s Vincent Atilano (37.42) and El Capitan’s Jonathan Tseko-Biffle (37.45) are 3-4 in the 300 hurdles; Helix’s Shon Martin, the section record-holder in the 110-meter hurdles at 13.84, is No. 4 seeded and with his 1:52.02 victory in the 800, Olympian’s Angel Cordero is No. 5.

Girls outlook: Madison’s Amirah Shaheed is No. 1 in the 200 at 23.52 and No. 2 in the 100 at 11.51 — just .02 behind Canyon’s Mikaela Warr. Eastlake’s Jaelyn Williams tops the 3,200 at 10:00.30 and has dropped the 1,600, where she set the section record to focus on the longer race. Section record-holder Gioana Lopizzo (9:59.08) of LCC is No. 3 and La Jolla’s Chiara Dailey No. 5 (10:09.78), giving the section three runners mining for gold. San Diego High junior Anisa Bowen-Fontenot is the front-runner in the 100 hurdles at 13.67 while Carlsbad’s Morgan Herbst tops the 300 hurdles at 41.45, with Bowen-Fontenot third at 42.27. Canyon Crest’s Elisabeth Driscoll remains No. 1 in the discus at 157-11. Del Norte’s Paige Echsner (13-3) and defending state champ Iliana Downing (12-10) are second and fifth in the pole vault, while Poway’s Tessa Buswell (2:07.12) is No. 4 in the 800 and La Jolla’s Payton Smith is third in the 400 at 53.56. Cathedral Catholic improved to 9:10.51 in the 4x800 relay, No. 5 in the state.
