49ers shrug off soft field, hold 'super intense' Thursday practice

Forget about that soggy practice field. The 49ers got after it Thursday. After being woken up by a 6 a.m. fire alarm, San Francisco held its typically intense Thursday practice in the way that it hoped.

The main concern with the reportedly dissatisfactory field was that the 49ers would be disadvantaged. If they had to hold back on a soft practice field while the Chiefs cut it loose, might that make the difference in the Super Bowl? It seems that’s a question we won’t need the answer to.

“It was super intense,” Trent Williams said Thursday.

For those unfamiliar, the 49ers have one genuine practice a week, and it’s on Thursday. Wednesday and Friday’s practices are glorified walkthroughs.

Javon Hargrave, who said his nagging hamstring injury was aided by the extra week of rest, smiled at questions about practice on the reportedly unsatisfactory field.

“We had a great practice today,” Hargrave said. “Especially on the defensive side. We was just going at it with each other. Even though I was going against the practice squad, they was coming at us too. It was just one of them days, you could tell everybody was rising to the occasion.”

The combination of a less than sanctimonious, early wakeup call and the intense practice, plus an hour of media availability, took it's toll.

“It was real out there today, I ain’t gone lie,” Samuel said. “They got it out of us today, I can’t wait to go lie down. Not lying.”

Williams said it took a moment to realize how intense the practice was, but that it reflected the stakes of the week.

“It was super intense," Williams said. "I didn’t even notice it at first. And then I overheard some guys saying at the table, ‘Man, there were people flying off the ball.’ I just kind of took myself back, like, ‘Damn, we were going pretty hard.’

"But I just think it’s the same way with anybody, you get to this stage, we’re practicing with a purpose at this point. We know what’s at stake.
We know what we’ve got a chance to do, so pretty sure Kansas City practiced hard today. It’s just what’s required to get to this spot.”

While San Francisco had four players who were limited Thursday, in George Kittle, Arik Armstead, Ambry Thomas and Oren Burks, all are expected to play Sunday. All that remains is the last walkthrough of the week on Friday.
