Willard: Farhan needs to bring in 1 more starter, and Blake Snell makes sense

The San Francisco Giants have spent the fourth-most money this offseason, and it culminated with the addition of Matt Chapman. But is that enough to move the needle and be legitimately competitive?

Despite Farhan Zaidi saying he feels like the free agency period is over, Mark Willard thinks the Giants need one more arm.

Willard said Monday that the Giants need one more veteran arm, because there are too many uncertainties with their current rotation, especially given the injuries and recovering statuses of Tristan Beck, Alex Cobb and Robbie Ray.

He said it doesn't have to be Jordan Montgomery or Blake Snell because the Giants have some trade options available to get a starter through other avenues, but that those two would be great additions.

On Tuesday, he urged the Giants to make a move for Snell because it makes sense. It's also something that injects some life into an often boring franchise of late.

"You have to, sometimes, splurge," Willard said. "You gotta grab everybody and be like, 'We're going to Disneyland!'
    'But dad, it's so expensive.'
'Bleep it, who cares? Let's go have an experience together.'

The beauty of these is there is next to no risk. If it blows up in your face and his arm falls off, maybe he opts in for his age 32 season, who cares? You've got $100 million coming off the books next year. Live a little!

The fact that this guy is potentially in front of you and you don't have to do the six- or seven-year thing, or sign him until his 41st birthday, if you can get him without having to do that, I'm sorry, I don't see the risk.

I see you being a real playoff contender if you sign him and if it doesn't go well, then this isn't going to last that long and you'll be ok."
