Jung Hoo Lee to undergo surgery on torn labrum, out for season

    2024-05-17

Jung Hoo Lee's season is over. That's the brutal news from the San Francisco Giants Friday afternoon, following the rookie center fielder's collision with a fence on May 12.

San Francisco announced that Lee suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder and will undergo season-ending surgery within the next few weeks. It's a devastating blow not just from a standpoint competitiveness, but one of energy.

Lee became an immediate fan favorite this season after signing a six-year, $113 million deal. He showed athleticism, range, tools and an overall electricity and positivity the Giants had been sorely missing. His absence is a gut punch in that regard.

Lee said the following after the injury.

“Mentally I could say that a month and a half playing here in the Major Leagues was the happiest moment in my baseball career. And I'll never forget the time here that I have spent this season.”

The Giants have played Luis Matos in center field in Lee's stead. The team also called up Marco Luciano, who, if nothing else, can provide some young energy for a team in need of it.
