Dave Flemming discusses when Robbie Ray could debut for Giants

The Giants are coming off a pair of impressive wins against the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros, with a Father's Day weekend homestand coming up against the (Southern California) Angels.

With San Francisco cresting, Dave Flemming joined the Morning Roast to break down where the squad is at.

The best part of the season is yet to come, when the Giants could get three high-level starters back in Robbie Ray, Alex Cobb and Blake Snell. Flemming assessed the starter situation and raved about Ray, and when he could return.

"Yeah, it's tricky. It's gonna be real tricky," Flemming said. "And you're hoping, there's been really good news lately, on especially Robbie Ray. We saw Robbie Ray in Arizona last week. I don't think the three of us talked about it after I saw him in person. The dude, I mean, yeah, I've seen him before. I've watched him for a lot of years but I couldn't believe how physically strong he looked.

"Robbie Ray looked ready to go. It was like oh my, we need that guy on our team just walking in the room. And all the reports of his two outings so far, now it's rookie ball in Arizona for a couple innings at a time, but he's throwing 97 and just blowing those guys away. And so that doesn't mean you're gonna come to the big leagues and do that, but that's a really good sign. I think it is possible that we see Robbie Ray, a first turn after the All-Star break in the Giants' starting rotation. So that's pretty good news."

He went on to discuss Alex Cobb and Jordan Hicks.

Flemming revealed that he had a conversation with Hicks about potentially moving to the bullpen. Hicks seemed open to it if he wears down, but not at the moment.

"I talked to Jordan fairly recently about this," Flemming said. "I just sidled up next to him and to sort of get his thoughts on the whole thing. You know, there is in his mind and everybody's mind kind of a limit. Like how far can you go for a guy who's never done this before? But the thing he said to me was like so far I just feel really good. There's been no fatigue, or there just hasn't been any red flags in terms of how he's felt. So I think he doesn't want in his own brain to say like, well, we got to shut it down once we get to 130 or 140 or whatever it is. If he's feeling great, then I don't think he wants to do that. So it's kind of a like, see as we go, but those other two guys come back and solve some problems."

Flemming doesn't think the Giants will move Kyle Harrison to the bullpen when Ray and Cobb (and Blake Snell return).

He said it's a good question but that, "my gut says no."
