Tiki Barber didn’t get to walk the red carpet at the’ Giants 100th Anniversary celebration at the Theater at MSG Thursday night, because his wife was stuck in Lincoln Tunnel traffic – but that just made it all the more glorious when he finally walked in.
“I have to give tons of credit to the fans that showed up last night; I walked in the theater and it was unbelievable, right? It was packed, people were clapping and giving me pounds, and the energy was awesome, so I appreciate all of them,” Tiki said.
Tiki spent a lot of time in the green room, behind where Bob Papa and Shaun O’Hara were doing interviews, and there was just a sea of greatness in the area – and as the players were added era by era, it was ended by David Tyree, whose helmet catch was voted by Giants fans as the best play in Giants history.
Even Jets fan Evan couldn’t argue with that.
“It’s almost impossible to argue that,” Tiki said. “There are a lot of great plays in Giants history, but that one is pretty damn special.”
“Everything about the play, like not only David Tyree's catch, but the Eli Escape, which I think is so underrated as part of that,” Evan said.
Tiki was impressed by Eli’s wit and entertainment value, which even with the ManningCasts is still something more people attribute to Peyton, but Tiki laughed when Eli said of that play that he ‘thanks Chris Snee for not blocking.’
“But the whole night was engaging and entertaining and just fun, and it was amazing to see all those legends on stage together,” Tiki said.
“It was a great event.”
But did Tiki run into Tom Coughlin?
“I did not get a chance to talk to Tom. It was chaotic backstage and considering how many people were there, and because I was late getting there, I wasn't hanging out in the cocktail hour green room,” Tiki said. “So, by the time I got settled, he went on stage. But, the cool thing about this event is that I got a chance to catch up with some of these guys I haven’t seen or had conversations with in forever…and it makes you miss the locker room, and the ease of being cool with those guys. Some of the teams we had were hugely successful, some of them had ultimate failure, but it doesn't mean that that season wasn't great and fun and amazing, and gave us ridiculous memories.”
You won’t see it all, but next Friday, the Giants will be airing a one-hour special on MSG, Giants.com, and their YouTube channel, so be sure to check it out!
