The San Francisco Giants can thank the Chicago Cubs for getting out of a five-game skid (of which the Cubs started, with two losses dealt) thanks to back-to-back wins on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Wednesday night saw an impressive debut performance from Hayden Birdsong, The 22-year-old struggled with command, but put in 4 2/3 innings with 3 earned runs, 3 walks, a home run and 5 strikeouts. His changeup was particularly impressive paired with a high-90s fastball.

Dave Flemming joined the Morning Roast Thursday and explained why Birdsong is someone to be excited about, especially if he can correct one issue.

"This was really my first time seeing him in person," Flemming said. "I was very impressed. I think he's got a chance to really be good."

His command is the area he wants to see more growth.

"The fastball command has to get a lot better," Flemming said. "Like, you cannot, and this is not me lecturing him. I was totally impressed. He did a great job. But you can't spray the fastball with two foot misses all over the place and succeed long term. You got to tighten that up. You don't have to throw every one of them for a strike. You just have to be a little more precise with that pitch. His changeup that he threw last night, he ended up getting a ton of swings and misses on that. thing. And I bet she threw more in that start than he ever has in any start in his professional career."

But the long-term view and short-term impact is promising.

"He's got the body to be a starter, he can fill out and can definitely get a lot stronger," Flemming said. "So that's going to happen. You should be excited about his potential. That is a kid who, he could make a lot of starts for the Giants. I really enjoyed watching him."
