Stephen Curry Breaks His Silence on Klay Thompson's Warriors Departure

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry broke his silence on longtime teammate Klay Thompson 's recent decision to sign with the Dallas Mavericks during an interview with ESPN 's Malika Andrews .

Curry, 36, said it "sucks" to not have Thompson as his teammate anymore and he "desperately" wanted him to return to the Warriors. The duo, along with forward Draymond Green , won four NBA championships and 518 games in the regular season and playoffs together between 2015-2022, a feat Curry believes is unlikely to be repeated.

"I mean obviously defining a dynasty can take a lot of different looks," Curry said. "People thought this was over in 2019 ... but 2022 was an amazing championship because we defied the odds ... That's 11 years of almost 12 years of championship relevancy built around a certain core.

"I don't think [it will be replicated] just because it's very hard to keep things together in this league. A lot more player movement. Me, Klay and Draymond, we complemented each other so well for so long. We all brought something different to the table, so we'll see. Records are meant to be broken. Dynasties come all different shapes inside of us, so we'll see."

Thompson, 34, spent his entire career with the Warriors and was the second-longest tenured player behind only Curry, with whom he formed the greatest shooting backcourt duo in NBA history. Thompson, Curry and Green's combined win total ranks sixth all-time among NBA trios; their 98 postseason victories ranks third all-time and their four championship titles are tied with the San Antonio Spurs' trio of Tim Duncan , Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili for the most by an All-NBA trio during the past 50 years.

Thompson averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game during the 2023-24 season, appearing in 77 games, the most since the 2018-19 season, having missed the 2019-20 season due to a knee injury and 2020-21 season due to an achilles injury. The Mavericks are two weeks removed from being defeated by the Boston Celtics in the 2024 NBA Finals.
