San Francisco 49ers Training Camp 2024 Preview

The 49ers were expected to go to the Super Bowl and they did. However, Brock Purdy and the 49ers could not get it done again this year. The 49ers are looking to contend again this year but all that starts in training camp. There are key battles to see the 49ers put the very best team they can out on the field and try to contend for the Super Bowl again. Let’s look at some key position battles for the 49ers training camp 2024 preivew.

    Three Position Battles To Watch

Safety: Ji’Ayir Brown vs. Malik Mustapha

In our first position battle in this 49ers training camp preview, we look at the safety position. While Talanoa Hufanga is the other starting safety, the other safety spot is up for grabs. This matchup is between 4th round draft pick Malik Mustapha and 2nd-year player Ji’Ayir Brown. How confident are you in Brown for the 49ers. While he has a few interceptions to his name, he is only a 2nd-year player. He doesn’t have his spot established. He’ll have to fight with his spot even if it is against a rookie this year.

WR3: Jauan Jennings vs. Ricky Pearsall vs. Jacob Cowing

Before, the 49ers only had Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, then with a bunch of names that just don’t leave you to be inspired. Jauan Jennings was one of those names. Now, in a move that was surprising for the 49ers. The 49ers took Ricky Pearsall in the first round. They also took Jacob Cowing in the 4th round. I would argue that Jennings is on the outside looking in for the spot of WR3 on the team. They all have different playstyles which could lead it being to a more scheme fit, but they’ll all fight for reps as the camp and season go on.

Right Tackle: Colton McKivitz vs. Dominick Puni

They have Dominick Puni listed as a backup LG but I think there needs to be a serious discussion about him playing at the RT position. He’s about as big as Colton McKivitz and McKivitz was…not good last year. He gave up 9 sacks. Dominick has played some Tackle and has played Guard in college. That’s part of the reason for his potential is his position versatility. If the 49ers were smart they would at least let him have some snaps at RT. McKivitz is not good enough for him to be the surefire starter without contention. Be on the lookout for that.

Brandon Aiyuk Lives In Looney Tunes Land, The 49ers Should Trade Him
    Ready To Breakout: Ambry Thomas

The 3rd year player has a chance to breakout for the 49ers this year. After being battle-test last year, he is set to start at corner for the 49ers. He held his own in the playoffs last year and played well in a limited CB room. We’ll see how he does as he goes through his 3rd season in the NFL. He could earn himself a contract extension after this season to avoid playing on an expiring deal.

    Rookie To Watch: Ricky Pearsall

All eyes are on Ricky Pearsall, there are a few reasons for this. The 49ers did not have to draft Pearsall at 31, they could have traded down and got him early in the 2nd round. However, they chose to pick him in the 1st round and have the 5th-year option. It’s really not Ricky Pearsall himself that we’re watching, but it’s how it will affect the team around him. Brandon Aiyuk has been in trade rumors all off-season. Could that be a reason why Pearsall went in the 1st-round? Could they be planning life after Aiyuk?

Also, I’m not even sure he was the best WR on the board. I don’t think it’s crazy to say that Keon Coleman, Ladd McConkey, and AD Mitchell might have been better selections. They also could have gotten a CB here like Kool-Aid McKinstry, Mike Sainristil, or Kamari Lassiter. They ended up getting Renardo Green, which I consider a reach in the end of the 2nd-round. Or the 49ers could have went with OL and gotten someone like Kingsley Suamataia or Jackson Powers-Johnson. All I’m saying is there were probably better options on the board and the 49ers went with Ricky Pearsall and then grabbed another WR in the 4th round, not sure I understand.

    Fantasy Sleeper: Jacob Cowing

Speaking of the 4th round receiver that the 49ers also got, we have Jacob Cowing as our fantasy sleeper. You’re talking about a true slot guy in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. In an offense that has been simplified for Brock Purdy to a fault that everyone thinks he’s better than he is, Cowing could carve out a role on this team as a slot guy and see a lot of looks. Shanahan is a very good playcaller and will get guys open. Especially if you play in a PPR league, Cowing might have a few games where he can get you about 15 points and fill out the low-end of your roster.

49ers are back in it to win the Super Bowl. Brock Purdy, as awesome as his fans say he is, hasn’t won it yet. Despite having a very good team around him that is seemingly always overlooked and all the credit is given to Purdy when they win the team isn’t good enough when they lose, they’ll have another shot at the Super Bowl. Let’s see if Purdy can get it done with a really good team again.
