( KRON ) — A U.S. District Judge sentenced Vo Nguyen, 32, to 132 months in prison on Thursday. U.S. District Attorney Ismail J. Ramsey said Nguyen, a San Francisco native, shot at a USPS postal worker “over a dozen times” in 2023.

According to Nguyen’s plea agreement, on April 1, 2023, a USPS postal worker dressed in uniform was delivering mail to Nguyen’s residence when the San Francisco local came out of his house and yelled at the USPS employee.

Nguyen later admitted the way he approached the postal worker made it seem like “he wanted to fight.” The USPS employee backed up, turned, and ran away from Nguyen’s house. A foot chase ensued until the USPS worker pepper-sprayed Nguyen.

After being pepper-sprayed, Nguyen went back to his house, “grabbed a 9-millimeter semi-automatic pistol, got into his car, and went looking for the USPS employee,” prosecutors said.

Nguyen admitted that he found the postal worker and “fired approximately five to six shots at him” while driving. After briefly pausing, Nguyen “then fired approximately five more shots at the USPS employee who was then running away,” the plea agreement said.

The USPS worker then ran in the opposite direction Nguyen was driving, so Nguyen made a U-turn and continued chasing the postal worker. As the USPS employee took cover by crouching behind a parked SUV, Nguyen “fired three more shots” at the postal worker, the plea agreement read.

Nguyen then drove away before driving back to the victim and chased them on foot for several blocks before the USPS worker pepper sprayed Nguyen a second time. Nguyen was subsequently arrested and has remained in custody since April 1.

A federal jury indicted Nguyen on May 2, 2023. He was charged with assault upon a federal employee with a deadly or dangerous weapon and discharging a firearm in connection with a crime of violence, “amongst other charges.” He pleaded guilty to both charges.

In addition to his 11-year sentence, a U.S. District Judge also sentenced the 32-year-old to three years of probation following his release.
