Stephen Curry’s Future With Warriors In Question Amid Roster Changes

The Golden State Warriors have had a confusing NBA offseason. What began as a terrible asset management case has given way to a solid roster. Now, rumors of a blockbuster trade keep swirling. However, no such deal has come through yet. During that initial stage, though, the team parted ways with two bonafide legends.

Letting Chris Paul walk for free and then trading Klay Thompson for essentially nothing was a questionable move by Mike Dunleavy & Co. In Paul, they had a floor general who led to the team having a positive plus-minus in non-Stephen Curry minutes for the first time. In Thompson, the team had a bonafide franchise legend. The two moves brought the other Splash Brother and his future in The Bay into focus.

With a team still brimming with question marks, the future of Stephen Curry is the immediate question.

What is the future of Stephen Curry?

For his part, Curry remains adamant about staying with the Warriors and finishing out his career with Golden State. “Being in one place for my own career, and it’s like a broken record, but I know it’s really hard to do that. I want to be greedy and say we can be relevant and be in the mix and give ourselves a realistic chance to win while I’m still growing these gray hairs and doing high school visits in the Bay [Area] for my daughter,” Curry said. “It’s crazy. [It’s] just the nature of where I’m at. But yes, all that to say I love the Bay and the Bay is home and I never want that to change.”

Entering his 15th season in the league, Steph’s loyalty and dedication remain commendable. Further, it does put some of the questions to rest. However, stars are known to change their minds in this league, so seeing a competitor like Steph pursue other avenues wouldn’t be a complete surprise.

Nick Wright of First Things First on FS1 is sure about one possible outcome. According to the media pundit, Curry teaming up with LeBron James is inevitable.

But it looks like the two-time MVP is setting on ending his career with Golden State. He still wishes that the Warriors could have found a way to retain “Killa Klay.” “We would’ve loved to maintain the core and finish out together. So, you have to be able to celebrate what we accomplished and be able to move,” Curry said. “It’s something that I never imagined would be a reality, but we want him to be happy.”

Have the Warriors done enough for Steph?

As a franchise icon and legend and one of the best players ever, Stephen Curry is the cream of the crop. However, as a result, it is incumbent upon the Warriors to ensure that the team around him is competitive enough for Championship contention. At the beginning of free agency, that certainly wasn’t the case.

However, Golden State has done an incredible job building the roster since the Klay Thompson sign-and-trade to Dallas. In Buddy Hield, they have a shooter who can mimic much of Klay’s shooting proficiencies. As a pseudo-Splash Brother, Hield can thrive in the Steve Kerr system.

Similarly, DeAnthony Melton gives them the perimeter defense that has been missing since the days of prime Klay. In addition to these two, the team also signed Kyle Anderson as a poor man’s Draymond Green.

A gritty veteran defender with savvy playmaking chops, Anderson can do for the bench unit what Green does for the starters. Further, Kyle has had years shooting at or around 40% from long range. With the Steph Curry vortex giving him ample shooting space, the team will be hoping for one of those years from the veteran.

All this without mentioning the blockbuster Lauri Markkanen trade rumors that keep swirling around the team. While no deal has come to fruition yet, updates come in seemingly daily about both parties’ interest in a potential trade.

As a legitimate 7-footer, Markkanen gives Golden State some much-needed size without compromising on the shooting that makes them lethal. Additionally, while the rest of the roster is deep, the Warriors do not have a true star alongside Steph. In Lauri, the team can fill that need too, giving Curry a legitimate hand to rely on.
