Kyle Shanahan wanted Bill Belichick on his staff so badly, he was willing to give the former New England Patriots coach license to name his job.

The San Francisco 49ers head coach told reporter Tim Kawakami that he made an offer to Belichick to "do anything he wanted with the 49ers this year," but Belichick offered a polite refusal.

"I can't believe he's not a head coach of a team right now," Shanahan said . "I know what I would do if I was an owner, so that shocks me, and the last thing you want to do is insult someone like Bill Belichick."

Shanahan added that he knows Belichick loves the game so he decided to float the offer. It was apparently an offer Belichick could -- and did -- refuse.

"I was like 'Would you be interested?' And he was very nice and appreciative and he politely turned me down," Shanahan shared.
