Despite being in the NFL MVP conversation for much of last season, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy still has his doubters.

Former Super Bowl champion Aqib Talib is one of them, and the five-time Pro Bowl cornerback wasn’t shy about sharing his true feelings about Purdy while discussing receiver Brandon Aiyuk during a recent appearance on FanDuel’s “Up & Adams.”

“Aiyuk is emerging, he’s probably in my top three receivers,” Talib said . “Now, if you can get him with a real quarterback, he can go crazy.”

To insinuate Purdy isn’t a “real” quarterback is a bit of a bold statement.

After all, the 24-year-old signal-caller led the NFL in passer rating (113) and ranked second in completion percentage (69.4), third in touchdown passes (31), fifth in passing yards (4,280) and seventh in big-time throws (32) with the third-lowest percentage of pressures turned into sacks (13.1) in the NFL last season, per Pro Football Focus .

It was also recently revealed that Purdy essentially played the first three months of the season while still rehabbing his surgically repaired elbow. The second-year QB led the 49ers to an 8-3 record while throwing for 2,871 yards and 19 touchdowns, and he led all QBs in completion percentage on passes of 20 or more yards.

In addition to Talib, several NFL executives, coaches and scouts were also down on Purdy. In ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler’s annual positional rankings , Purdy fell outside of the top 10 behind guys like Dak Prescott, C.J. Stroud and Matthew Stafford.
