Brock Purdy's Revealing Take On Being 49ers' 'Superhero'

All signs point to Brock Purdy soon being rewarded with the lavish contract that denotes full-fledged NFL stardom. Even after he puts pen to paper on that new deal next offseason, though, don't expect the San Francisco 49ers signal-caller to change his approach.

As his third season as the Niners' starting quarterback fast approaches, Purdy explained why coach Kyle Shanahan doesn't need him to be a "superhero" in San Francisco's offense.

“How we have success here as 49ers quarterbacks (is about) being efficient, making the right decisions over and over and over again,” he said, per Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle . “Trying to be a superhero and make all these different kinds of throws and stuff—that’s not how we’re coached. That’s not how we win games here."

Widespread doubts about Purdy's viability as the Niners' franchise quarterback have broadly evaporated following his strong sophomore season. The former seventh-round pick took his game to a new level in 2023, throwing for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions while leading San Francisco to the Super Bowl.

The 49ers fell short against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, of course, but figure to be right back in the mix for the Vince Lombardi Trophy this season—the last on Purdy's bargain rookie contract.
