49ers third-round pick could 'force his way into starting lineup', per report

The San Francisco 49ers expect to compete for a Super Bowl next season, and they could be getting huge contributions from an unlikely source.

At the epicenter of San Francisco's offensive arsenal is superstar running back Christian McCaffrey , who uses elite speed, strength, and rare instincts to cut defenses apart.

Both McCaffrey and 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy benefit from a robust San Francisco offensive line, which performed admirably last season but may be witnessing a depth chart shakeup in 2024.

According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, 49ers third-round pick Dominick Puni is legitimately challenging for a starting spot at guard.

"Dominick Puni, the Niners’ third-rounder out of Kansas, has gotten reps with the first-team offense at guard, and has played well enough to make some with the team think he’s going to force his way into the starting lineup," Breer said on Monday.

Puni started his college football career at Central Missouri before transferring in 2022 to Kansas, from where he was selected with the No. 86 pick by San Francisco in April's draft.

Puni is no stranger to excellence, having been named First-team All-Big 12 last season for Kansas.

The 24-year-old now finds himself competing for a starting job on a Super Bowl contender.
