A 33-year-old motorist suspected of running over and killing a man in San Jacinto, then fleeing the scene, was out of custody Monday on a $75,000 bond.

Darrell James Leroy Davis of Moreno Valley was arrested and booked into the Smith Correctional Facility Saturday night on suspicion of hit-and-run resulting in death.

Davis posted bail Sunday afternoon and was released from the Banning jail.

According to Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Patrick Lynch, the victim, whose identity was not immediately released, was walking along State Street, just south of Esplanade Avenue, shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday when Davis allegedly plowed into him in his 2015 Chevrolet Camaro.

Lynch did not specify whether the pedestrian was crossing the roadway or walking alongside it at the time.

The suspect sped away without stopping, the sergeant alleged.

He said that patrol deputies and paramedics reached the location within a few minutes and found the victim unconscious with catastrophic injuries. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The ensuing investigation led to the identification of the vehicle involved," Lynch said. "It was later located and stopped in the city of Moreno Valley."

Davis was pulled over just after 10 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Kitching Street and Sunnymead Boulevard, where he was taken into custody without incident.

"The vehicle had extensive damage and was impounded as evidence," Lynch said.

Background information on Davis was unavailable.
