San Jose Sharks 5th-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft Nate Misskey told reporters he was golfing when he found out he was selected.

"Just kind of like watching it on my phone when I could. I was actually out golfing with my dad and my brothers. There wasn't much service out there. My phone just started blowing up," Misskey said. "From getting calls from my agent, coaches, and buddies. It's a pretty awesome moment. You kind of stop whatever you're doing and just realize it's a huge moment and a big step in your life. It was an awesome experience."

Misskey said he is currently staying with his family in Banff, Alberta.

In 44 games with the Victoria Royals, the alternate captain had seven goals and 27 assists. At 6'4, 209 lbs, Misskey is known as a physical defenseman.

Since Mike Grier took over, the Sharks have emphasized size in draft picks. Director of Player Personnel Scott Fitzgerald explained why.

"Competitive skill, right? I mean, there's no success without being competitive," Fitzgerald said. "That's the number one thing you got to do. You have to compete, or you won't be a Shark."

While compete isn't relative to size, the physicality of players like Misskey, Carson Wetsch, and Colton Roberts are perfect examples of competitive skill.
