San Jose man dies from severe heat: officials

( KRON ) — The scorching heat across the Bay Area is now officially deadly. A San Jose man died on Tuesday from heat-related illnesses, Mayor Matt Mahan said on X.

The victim was a homeless man who lost his life. According to the San Jose Police Department, he was found dead near 2011 Monterey Road around 7:58 p.m.

It was then determined the cause of death was heat-related. This is the first reported heat-related death of this week’s Bay Area heat wave.

The death happened on a record-setting day of heat in San Jose.

On Tuesday, San Jose tied a decades-old record of 102 degrees on July 2, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The record dates back to 1970.

It is unknown at this time if any other Bay Area residents have died from the heat. Earlier in the week, the NWS warned the ongoing heat wave is an “exceptionally dangerous situation.”

Mahan urged residents to keep cool by heading over to one of San Jose’s many cooling centers, which are open late through July 9. Cooling centers in the city include the Camden Community Center, Emma Prusch Farm Park and Roosevelt Community Center.
