Will Smith Enters A Key Summer For Sharks Development

Will Smith is turning pro after signing his entry-level contract with the San Jose Sharks, and the next two months are vital for him to be ready for the NHL.
Director of Player Development Todd Marchant emphasized that Smith can focus on training this summer compared to his 2023 Summer.
"Last year, he went from the combine to the draft, to development camp, to the world junior summer showcase, and to school. There's just no time," Marchant said. He's still training, but he has two solid months to really get in the gym and get bigger and stronger. That's what most of these kids need."
Smith told reporters on Wednesday that he is adjusting his diet to allow him to add more weight.
Last year, Smith wasn't signed with the organization after he was selected No. 4 overall. With his ELC signed this time, he felt this camp was slightly different.
"I'm coming to this camp [and] it's obviously a little different. I'm signed for the next year," Smith said. "Seeing where I'm going to live and seeing the areas were more of things I was doing this camp. It's definitely more real as the season is coming."
On Tuesday night, Macklin Celebrini and Smith threw the first pitch at a San Jose Giants game.
Smith joked with reporters that he and Celebrini were "pissed off" when they found out they had to face off against each other one more time.
"It's probably our seventh game versus each other. We were pretty pissed off in the room when we found out we weren't on the same team," Smith said. "It was pretty fun. Hopefully, it'll be one of the last times [we play against each other]."
While it was just a scrimmage, Smith had an impact game. He scored a goal, assisted on another, and scored the shootout-winning goal. He understands that while it might not mean anything, taking the week of development camp seriously is important.
"It's still summertime, but it's still a game. I think we're all competitive here," Smith said. "It's obviously fun getting to see the fans. [It's] good to introduce yourself to them with your play, and it's pretty fun."
Smith must continue to train his body to be ready for professional hockey. Because he has signed his entry-level contract, he cannot go back to the NCAA and play for Boston College. No matter what, Smith will play against men in the NHL or AHL.
